In the April 28th Sun-Sa-Mo,  Professor Jang-Choon Yoo gave a presentation under the title of ‘Moore, Leader of the Baekjang Liberation Movement’.

Missionary Moore's full name is Samuel Forman, Moore and was called as Mosamyeol or Mosamyul in Korea.

Birth and place of birth are not well known. However, he came to Korea as a missionary of the Northern Presbyterian Church in 1892 and later established Seungdong Church. In particular, he was a missionary who worked hard to abolish discrimination against the so-called 'Baekjang'.

Baekjang was the lowest class of people in the Joseon Dynasty. They did not have a formal name, and they were mobilized as assistants when there was an event in the country, but there was no compensation for it, and they were people who had to take it for granted even when children spoke rudely to them.

However, it happened that the higher-class people refused to attend church because they could not worship in church with people of this class.

But Missionary Moore continued to worship together even in these circumstances, and even the children of 'Baekjang' were accepted at the school established by the church.

Later, Avison, the doctor of Emperor Gojong treated  Seong-chun Park, who was one of the 'Baekjang'. So later on, Seong-chun Park became a christian and delivered a patriotic opening speech at the People's Assembly, saying that the world has become a world where even 'Baekjang' can live like this.

Missionary Moore was a missionary who practiced personal evangelism, church establishment, and social reformation. In particular, he considered improving the uncivilized cultural/structural situation as one of the central purposes of 'Mission'.

That is why such structural improvement led to great fruit in missions, and he said that caring for those at the lowest level of society was a ministry that embodies the heart and spirit of Jesus.

Looking at the ministry of Missionary Moore, we think of Jesus, who served and loved the lowest people. I believe missionary is to tell us what Jesus did. So, let us try to live a 'missionary life' today as well.

Thank you once again, and see you next week :)
