"Even though I die, the Korea Daily News must live forever to save the Korean nation"

Ernest Bethel, a journalist from England, came to Korea to cover the Russo-Japanese War, and was angry at the atrocities of the Japanese imperialists. So in anger at the atrocities of the Japanese imperialists, he informed the world of their evil deeds of the Japanese, and furthermore, he founded the Dahan Maeil Shinbo(Korea Daily News).

Bethel published an anti-Japanese ethnography using his British identity, and also covered Ji-yeon Jang's 'I wail Bitterly Today' in the Daehan Maeil Shinbo(Korea Daily News). In response, Emperor Gojong awarded a special letter of appointment and gave a total of 10,000 won, each of 1,000 won a month, to help the newspaper company for its maintenance.

However, the Japanese imperialists requested deportation to the British consul-general.

After going through several trials, he was eventually expelled, but he returned to Korea then he died of heart disease at the age of 37.

The life of Ernest Bethel, who loved Korea more than anyone and risked his life for Korea, seems to resonate with us.

We would like to thank Professor Seo for giving me today's presentation, and we'll see you next time :)
