This Sun-Sa-Mo was presented by Professor Cho Daeyeon under the title of 'Appenzeller, a Pioneer in Modern Education'.
Missionary Appenzeller founded Pai Chai School in the year of 1886, and Chungdong Methodist Church in the year of 1887.
Pai Chai School was the first modern educational institution accredited by the government, and Chungdong Church is known for the first brick-made chapel.
In addition, he did a lot of research on Korean culture, and even during under the Japanese colonial rule, he nurtured the independence movement and organized the 'Mutual Friendship Society' in the Pai Chai School.
He was also very interested in the document movement, so he worked in translating the Bible.
In the midst of such vigorous activity, he passed away due to a ship crash accident while on his way to attend the Bible Translation Committee held in Mokpo in 1902.
However, the missionary's work continued not only in his time, but also to Appenzeller II and Elise Appenzeller, who became the 4th Pai Chai School principal and furthermore, his daughter Elise Appenzeller became the first principal of Ewha School.
With the legacy of the lives of missionaries who devoted themselves to the gospel in a land where no one looked more than 100 years ago, the gospel was spread widely, and it was able to lay a great foundation for the development of Korean society.
We hope that there will be a greater understanding and passion for missions through the Handong Global University Sun-Sa-Mo meetings, and we forward for the next meeting :)
